Building a Community of Literacy

Building a Community of Literacy

Second-grade classrooms were buzzing with a special kind of energy Friday as we welcomed some of the people who built the foundation of our district. The morning kicked off with a visit from the Retired Teachers Committee. These dedicated educators, who have spent their lives fostering a love of literacy, arrived with a mission: to ensure every single second grader went home with a brand-new book of their own.

While the books were a thrill, the day held an even bigger surprise. The students were honored to meet a living piece of their school’s history: Mrs. Kathryn McWhorter. It isn't every day that students get to shake hands with the namesake of their school. Having Mrs. McWhorter walk the halls and interact with the "next generation" was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do. Her presence turned a standard Friday into an "epic" historical moment for our young learners.

We want to extend our deepest gratitude to the Retired Teachers Committee and Mrs. McWhorter for their time, their generosity, and their continued investment in our students.

Through literacy and community support, we are doing more than just teaching kids to read—we are showing them that they are part of a long, proud tradition of excellence.
